Communications and Public Affairs Intern

Responsibilities

This individual will assist with communications and outreach tasks including, but not limited to short- and long-form writing and content development, political and public policy message development, monitoring and reporting, media and field outreach, event coordination, research, and other communications and administrative support tasks. 

As no single applicant is likely to have all the following skills, applicants with experience in at least 2-3 of these areas, and a willingness to expand their skillset are highly encouraged to apply.  

Writing and Editing:

  • Photo captions 
  • Copyediting 
  • Transcribing  

Media Relations:

  • Help compile and update media contact lists 
  • Track and monitor media coverage 
  • Add to reports 
  • Conduct research  
  • Prepare media reports on assigned subjects 
  • Assist with press release/media advisory writing 
  • Perform daily, weekly, and monthly media audits 

Social Media:

  • Contribute to social media quantitative and qualitative analytics reporting 
  • Social media comment monitoring and reporting  
  • Monitor and research influencers, trending topics and tools 

Miscellaneous Communications and Administrative Support: 

  • Taking notes during meetings 
  • Report preparation for meetings and presentations 
  • Virtual event planning and coordination 
  • General administrative and communications support as assigned 

Requirements

  • Strong writing skills 
  • Recent graduate (graduated within the past year) or an undergraduate/graduate student in journalism, communications, public relations, political communications/science, marketing, digital media, or a development-related field 
  • Computer literate (working knowledge of word processing, PowerPoint, Excel) 
  • Possess excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills 
  • Genuine enthusiasm for creating compelling comms and marketing materials  
  • Self-starter, good time management, creative, with ability to communicate in a professional manner  
  • Ability to work well independently and within a team  
  • Commitment to the continuous improvement of service quality and SE’s mission 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Involved (or with prior involvement) in student organizations on campus or within the community 
  • Interest in public affairs, politics, and news a plus! 

Location:

Remote – Iowa based

Pay:

$16.50/hour
