The Strategic Elements team sat down with Washington D.C. insider and public affairs expert, Kevin Carpenter. Kevin joined Strategic Elements in October and has been a strong asset to the team ever since. Known for his strong writing ability, which recently earned him the nickname the “Velvet Pen,” Kevin brings years of strategic communications and corporate strategy expertise to the team. You can read our conversation below.
What is something you learned in childhood that has always stuck with you?
Leaves of three, let it be. That’s an important one.
Are you a morning person or a night owl?
I am definitely a morning person – it’s when I’m most productive and do some of my best writing. I’m also a bit of a breakfast enthusiast.
What made you decide to live in Washington D.C.?
If you want to study and experience our political system firsthand, there’s no better place to be than DC.
What is your go to comfort meal?
Spicy vegetarian chili and sweet cornbread. Despite being born north of the Mason-Dixon Line, I have southern taste buds.
What is a skill you think all college students should graduate knowing?
Clear, concise writing. It doesn’t matter what career path you choose; you’ll be writing a lot – emails, memos, white papers, presentations, and more. Make sure your wordsmithing game is on point.
What is a pet you have always wanted to own? If none, why?
I always thought it would be cool to have a pet monkey. That probably explains why Curious George was one of my favorite book series as a kid.
What motivates you to be productive?
My daughters. They are my motivators generally in life.
Who would you cast to play you in a movie?
The Rock, obviously. Can’t you see the resemblance?!
